I have heard lots of great things about "Brazil", but I haven't seen it yet. I should add it too!

"12 Monkeys" is indeed very special, when the movie came out I thought it was a mindless action movie - how wrong I was! Actually I have always found Brad Pitt to be pretty good, just always a little bit <i>not good enough</i>. I read this article that saw the reason of Pitt's bad reputation in the fact that he always appears together with other actors who outshine him (Edward Norton, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman). In this film, he tackles this challenging role quite well, but is just no match against Willis.

I enjoyed Twelve Monkeys, mainly because it's *just* different enough from similar Hollywood sci-fi thrillers. I'm not sure whether it's Willis' performance (making his character more vulnerable than the type he usually plays was an important factor I think) or Pitt's (who gets cast because of his good looks but is in fact a more versatile actor than most people give him credit for). Or maybe it's because Terry Gilliam does things a bit differently. He seems to be in an unusul position in that he's an A-list director, but and indie/arthouse director at heart. A similar position that Tim Burton holds in the industry I suppose, although they're very different in style.

Which reminds me, I need to add Brazil to my 'to watch' list! Have you seen that yet, by the way?

Ohhh, how nice to hear from you again! Yeah, "Dr. Strangelove" is entering my own all-time favourites as well.

I have never seen the Goons, but of course sort of grew up with Monty Python as well. I have always found some of their excuses not all <i>that</i> funny, but they are excused by the sheer greatness of their amazingly funny ones. In that sense, I absolutely love British humour after all, and completely ignored the fact that "Dr. Strangelove" is perhaps Kubrick's most 'british' film.

Oh God, Peter Sellers is wonderful. Before I read the Wikipedia article about the film, I didn't even recognize his many faces. Not even the president and Dr. Strangelove! I would also have failed with "Kind Hearts and Coronets" if I hadn't known that Alec Guinness is playing all of them. Have you seen it?

I think I like the way how satire works: Sometimes something is just too cruel and too serious that its absurdity forces you to criticize it with humour. "Dr. Strangelove" is the pinnacle of how this is done with war. So perfect indeed!

It's difficult to pick a favourite quote, there are too many good ones! "Sir, you can't let him in here. He'll see everything. He'll see the big board!" XXXD

I'm glad you enjoyed this because it's one my all-time favourites. I'm still in the process of watching Kubrik's back catalogue, starting with the most well-known first purely by accident (I've only seen this, 2001 and A Clockwork Orange).

I was brought up on Monty Python but also the Goons, so perhaps part of the appeal here was the multiple appearances of the late and great Peter Sellers.

I don't know if there are as many hidden meanings as the critics suggest either: the obvious bits of humour work so well for me anyway! I like dark, dry humour and satire too so it's the 'perfect' comedy for me. The absurdity of the situations is what comes across so clearly...it's a film that's making a serious point about a serious issue, but in the end the best way to approach it was to poke fun at it. Genius.

My favourite line is possibly my favourite movie quote ever: "Gentlemen! You cannot fight in here! This is a war room!" Utterly, utterly perfect.

Oh! "Thirst" is the absolute perfect movie to get back into it. As I have mentioned, its sophisticated visual appeal should totally please any fan of Park Chan-wook, more so than "I'm a Cyborg but that's OK". The characters are also much more layered and controversial than they are in Cyborg. I'm looking forward to how you'll like the film!

I found his Vengeance trilogy to improve with time - Sympathy for Mr Vengeance was good, Oldboy was very good and LAdy Vengeance was stunning. I've not seen I'm a Cyborg or this either, but thanks for reminding me that I'd promised myself I would.

What I love about his movies is not only the cinematography (which is beautiful, even when it's brutal and violent) but the dark humour he employs. I can imagine how that black comedy could translate well into a vampire film...there are of course hundreds of good vampire movies made over the years, but if a director can tell three stories about revenge in succession and make each one special, I wouldn't find that a problem at all.

I'll reserve my final judgement for when I've seen this, but I noticed some moments of evil creeping into the female characters in the Vengeance movies too...Lady Vengeance is the obvious one, but it was all about her redemption and that conflict between retribution and the bond with her daughter.

I need to start watching movies regularly again...I might start with this one!

I didn't know the end, so I was quite surprised and thus ended up liking the film. Apart from that I found the directing too artificial to make it even to Kim Ki-Duk's own films.

Ahahaha, oh my god, the scene, in which the policemen tell her she's responsible herself for being raped! So cynical!

Oh wow, I have never considered “La Jetée” to be to an homage to “Vertigo” but indeed it makes a whole lot of sense! I agree that a great homage must be able to create something new and it definitely is the case for “La Jetée”. Although I’m not as much of a fan of “Vertigo” as you are, I definitely appreciate the motive of hunting for a love in the past.

PS. I’m wondering what this person who made the comparison video used as a font. It totally looks like a font I should be able to recognize, heh.

Hahahaha, my own list from when I was fifteen must have been much more ridiculous. So don't worry. ;)

Which Facebook list?

What? No way, I think my top 5 ended up being a "absolute favorite out of my 5 favorite genres", but ultimately I think that the list is not too bad. These films also happen to be the ones that had the largest impact on me (except it hurts a bit that "Huo zhe" and "Dogville" are not on it.) But yeah, I'd definitely say that I've found every single of these titles absolutely mind-blowing when I saw them.

Hey, don't post things I said when I was fifteen! XXD
I've created some list for Facebook two years ago that represents my current tastes much, much more, but there would be some important changes nevertheless.

And hehe, your top 5 is more an escape from making favorite lists than a favorite list itself, isn't it? Since you chose your movies by the way they represent your movie geekness rather than by impact, as you did on your previous lists?
